A Friend in Disguise!!

Life is strange, really strange.
It never gives you what you ask for.
Even the surest of thoughts get away and you cant do a thing.
It has its own way.
Life is a game but with rules which are undefined.
They change when you least expected them to.
The friends you trust your life with do not turn out to be your friend at all;
The stranger you were not aware of, gives you the maximum support you never expected off,
The trust you have, shatters in a moment,
The doubts you had turns out to be your biggest reality.
It surely is strange! As players are unaware of rules Whereas, the viewer knows it all.

On The Threshold of a Leap

[A journey of words through the times that I’ve spent in this institution, from AMAG and then BMS, making many friends, to finding a person that I am, an individual, proud to be.]

Five years, it’s been five years since a curious, shy girl that was me entered the premises of this building for the first time. Everything was for a first time, each step an achievement.

The moments move past me in a blur, a rapid sequence of still shots, moments of, jumping into the train for the first time, running down the corridors, voicing those opinions, etching those first words, growing up within these walls, only to learn how to fly, how to rise beyond the limits and blossom in the blue sky.A period of time enmeshed with emotions and filled with events, from friendships to crushes, from authority to responsibility, from the unknown to the widely known, from J.C. to T.Y., a journey in which I have grown.

A quest for realization, a journey of knowledge, experiencing everything, the emotions, and the incidents and bearing the consequences. Amidst the events a desire to find yourself, to encapsulate that knowledge and to burst forth with passion. These very words that flow weren’t so smooth before. They were thoughts like the vapour now condensed onto the paper. Dew drops on the leaves, the first rays of the sun, the pink glow of the sunset, and the light of the dawn.

The time that is now a memory, the moments that have now passed, the jubilation that rises and along with it comes the pain of the separation. For those who don’t feel the pain, it’s just been a building, those who never gave anything to it, those who never learned, those who never felt, those who never rose, those who are moving like zombies, untouched and indifferent, nothing will ever matter to them, for nothing ever has.

The people who were involved in those clandestine plans, the sub-rose meetings and those hush-hush clans, for them it was the excitement, the thrill of thwarting the norms, the vanity of self where there was no self at all.

The intellectual, rather studious minds that grew, absorbing all that was around, using the resources they had, and achieving what they can.

These walls, those charts, the paints and that jari, the words, the layouts, the texture and the money, the thoughts, the voices, the struggles and the joy, few words to describe the society that was mine. The affirmation to that group, the journey of the truth, the realization of my abilities, and the fruit of my labour. Guided and co-coordinated with a dedication that matched mine, a mind that created what I visualized, the effect of seeing our output never fails to give us the joy, the also reminds us of the struggles we had, to fly. The committee that faithfully records a picturesque memory, the book that carries an imprint of those times, the book that we created to commemorate our souls.

The joyful revelry, the festive time, the chaotic confusion and the mayhem enfolds. Colours, people and charts all about, one asking you to perform, the others belong, choices and tension that spared no one, the run-u to the event, and in mid December we celebrate the “organized chaos” event!

An elite group rising within, emboldened by their sheer spirits, working within their constraints, yet always striving to win. The group of people where I belonged, where I learned and grew in thought, the odds were against us, but never did we fail to win. Organizing events, making presentations, having fun and loving life, are just some of the facets that I can attribute to us.
The colours of life, the experiences that make me, the thoughts that guide me, have brought me to this threshold where I will now go and face this world with everything that I behold. The journey of college life in Sydenham draws to a close, but the memories remain imprinted deep within my soul.

I conclude, with the couplets of “So Long Farewell”, Sound of Music (a classic beyond comparison!)
There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall
And the bells in the steeple too
And up in the nursery an absurd little birdIs popping out to say "cuckoo"Cuckoo, cuckoo
Regretfully they tell us Cuckoo, cuckoo
But firmly they compel us Cuckoo, cuckoo
To say goodbye . . . . . . to you
So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good bye
Good bye…. Good bye….. Good bye……

Unlock the “You” in you …

How often has the sight of those who are partially disabled or the homeless ones struggling to earn their living left you feeling pitiful about them? Families without enough support struggling to educate their children and having prosperous visions about them. If we have to categorize them under the name of ‘The Underprivileged Ones’, the types enlisted may never end. And looking at them what is the first feeling that strikes us back to reality?

Generally, people would thank their stars for they belong to none of these. They accept the fact that they are leading a normal carefree life and enjoying life as it comes and taking up the so-called challenges. Hah! We call these challenges and maybe to quite an extent they are. But what about the situations that these kids have had to face with absolutely no fault of theirs? It wasn’t their fault that they were orphaned. Nor was it theirs when they realized that they can’t enjoy things that children of their age can. Then how is it that most of them are still living? To be true, many-a-times their kind is more cheerful and more optimistic as compared to the privileged ones .

Haven't you ever observed a group of children singing popular songs in our local trains to earn their living? They’ve got music and a bunch of them singing to the best of the tunes thus, managing to get away with a few chillars. It may not mean much to us, but spare a thought for their enthusiasm when they are at work that too passionately with a pitiful smile.

This was just a snippet of the most likely situations in our local trains. Lord alone knows whose fault it was when penury struck their families leaving their entire generation struggling for a mere bread of survival. There might a few kids who know how important education is but even though education is given free there are other things that are not viz. books, uniforms, etc. What could they possibly do if their families can’t or don’t want to support them? Earn while they study? While that may seem to be a practical proposition, it's absolutely back-breaking for a 9 year old to juggle between a job and studies.

There are even others who have everything to support them but don’t have the ability to. Financial background along with people standing by through thick and thin in all means for them but the situation comes to a standstill when they are naturally obstructed to.
We, ourselves, feel completely disheartened and lost when we are unable to do things the way we want to because we are not allowed to and yet we complain about how bad life is. How great we are!
Spare a thought for those who want to be great journalists but their impaired vision prevents them from achieving their dreams? Imagine the plight of someone confined to a wheel-chair who wished to be an ace pilot. Though they are acutely aware that they won’t be able to subjugate their dreams, they continue livin life in a manner more cheerful than most others. A Smile – a kind gesture is what one would always find on their faces! And yes, it works wonders for them.

Doesn’t it plainly mean, that instead of grumbling around our style when we don’t get things we want, we should learn to adapt to at least some kind of simplicity? In a way, we definitely need to salute the peak level of cheerfulness these gems live through and learn to live life with a simpler attitude.

All said and done… May be visits to the social institutes as a part of our curricular Social Studies; hoping that we would earn a few more marks. Even if it is watching a sensitive, heartfelt movie; tears, emotions, pity and everything wrapped around it takes charge of our hearts and minds. But apart from feeling lucky for ourselves, how much do we try to do anything for them? This is not aiming towards the ones who smile at homeless kids on the streets or try to support the underprivileged ones even if it is the least possible manner that they can. But it is towards those who feel that such kids can be a nuisance around their sophisticated surroundings or even those, who always try to think of how they can earn more, enriching their lives with better standards of living, leaving them with no time for ‘others’.

Life is a creative empty web which is up to you how you can make it look attractive and valuable. We only want to fulfill our own desires and seek heavenly pleasures failing which we turn sour and erratic. Most of us forget the reason why we humans exist. Yes, you read me right … humans exits for social indulgence and survival. But at the very crux of it we forget that the underprivileged children or men/ women are an equal part of this social system and they have every right to seek and get the same desires. But only almighty knows the reason for their disability to seek the freedom which they don’t possess but which they can only feel or see. It becomes our duty to indulge in to their life and decorate their web too. Please note that the only way you can add value to your web is by helping and filling joy in people’s life who deserve it but can’t experience it with one’s help.

This plainly reminds me of one of our most circulated sms:
“Be close with someone who makes you happy. But be closer with someone who can’t be happy without you!” the balance I have deleted

Lucky, we live a normal life and can get more blessed if we contribute anything towards those deserving ones thus, helping them live a meaningful life and making us realize of a contented life.
All in all, it simply brings to my mind what our beloved Mother Teresa once said, “If we cannot love the one whom we see, how can we love God whom we cannot see?”

Changing Moments.

Life is a perfect cycle, of ups and downs,
Changes are many,
Including the one, in the way we use to be;
Time and again.
There would always be more changes,
Only hoping & waiting for the one,
That’s going to bring us together once again.

Thinking of those moments,
when we couldn’t wait to share those, talks with each other.
The sharing of secrets, joys and sorrows, were special moments of those times,
The bond between us was the thickest ever shared;
There was nothing that would break us and keep us apart.

And now!
Those talks are rarely there.
There are no secrets valuable enough, to be shared between us,
There is a whole new change in the company we keep,
There are hardly a few things, that are trying to bring us back together,
It is one of those rare blue moons where we bump into each other.

Life is a perfect cycle of ups and downs,
Time and again, changes are many,
Only waiting for the one ,
That’s bringing us together, once again;
And hoping that would keep us that way,
For ever and always.

MEMORIES

Enclosed among loose pages

A peacock feather dwells.

Somewhere in some corner

Nestle age-wrinkled roses.

The faded flower unfolds

Vivid memories of yesteryear.

The wrinkled roses retain

The smell of days bygone.

A fanatic desire to preserve,

Reminders of the reverence they deserve,

Clutching at the elusive strands

Of memories, binding them at their cores.

Long live my Alma Mater

It feels like a dream when I look back recollecting my association with Sydenham College. I had the first glimpse of the college in 1955 while on a stroll on the Marine Drive. The college building was absolutely new then. I hadn't the faintest idea that I would be associated with this institution for the next 42 years of my life.

In 1957, I enrolled as student here and my love affair with the college started. In those days, 1957-1963 that I was here as a student, the academic excellence was the hallmark of the college. Every professor who came to class was erudite, competent, strict on discipline and emphatic on the academic aspect. The classes used to be full with proper roll call and every lecture a test of our alertness and comprehension. Professors flew at jet speed and expected students to follow and keep up with them. The staff common room used to always be full and one could hear very heated debates on economic development issues, accounting practices, the legal cases or at times very hilarious arguments on current affairs. The Principal of the college used to be a very common member in the discussions. Most of the professors were such masters of their subjects that they participated in national debates, worked as advisors to the National Planning Commission, various committees of the Govt. of India and the Universities. One could grab the benefit of their expertise and knowledge.

Very rarely if ever, we could skip classes. Every professor insisted on every student attending classes and then in the time left to the students, all other extra curricular activities could be pursued. The College Annual Day was a function to witness. Even back then the college had a posse of societies and each was very active. The literary societies were the most active ones and would put up excellent programmes like dramas, poetry reading sessions, lectures of eminent authors etc.

It was very common for the Urdu Mandal to organize a shadow play at the Annual Day. The Gymkhana was active with the annual sports event. There were some very eminent sportsmen visiting the grounds on the day. I remember Shri Vijay Merchant, a chief guest, who participated in a walking race for the ex-students of the college. The stands of the University grounds or Cooperage used to be brimming with students on that day.

The Students' Union was the top student body with public election of the representative and eventually the election of the Chairman of this body. It was primarily the Union which used to organize the Annual Day function, a gala event for the year.

Now times have changed, personalities have changed, the problems have changed and all institutions have to adapt to these changes. I have enjoyed Sydenham as a student. But more than that, I enjoyed the college as a professor. The college has shaped my approach, my capacities and my personality. When I look back, I realize how much Sydenham has been to me. It is an integral part of me which is impossible to erase or forget.

Partings are sad and it had been the saddest event for me. But everyone has to play his innings and when the umpire lifts his finger one has to walk back to the pavilion.

I walked back to the pavilion with a great sense of content and satisfaction that I have played my innings to the best of my abilities.

All I say now is "Long live my Alma Mater and let it grow from strength to strength."
